Medea: Playwright’s Purpose

“Medea” is a very controversial tragedy. Written by the Greek playwright Euripides, what is the primary purpose of the play? Is the purpose important or meaningful today? How so?

  1. To me the purpose was to show the different types of sacrifices people make to live better, or in this case, to be with the person you love. It is meaningful in a way, apart from taking innocent life. We all make great sacrifices to get to where we are at now, but some of us go over and beyond and do the unthinkable mostly because they feel that they have no other choice but to give up, and make other suffer.

  2. The primary purpose of this play is to show the different sacrafices that people make. The purpose is very meaningful today because you will be surprised by what people would do to get where they want to be or what people have done to get where they are now. For example, Medea killed her children just to be with a man, the one she loved deeply. People will do the unthinkable and its very scary nowadays.

  3. The primary purpose of the play is to show what someone is willing to do to be happy by doing whatever it takes. It is meaningful to a certain extent because it shows the determination of a person but it also is bad because now a days people will do anything to get what they want and it doesn't always end up in a positive matter.

  4. The primary purpose of this play is to show the extremes some people will go too when their in love, whether it be for their own benefit or someone else's. This purpose is important because many people today will go to the extremes for the one they love. No matter if that person feels the same or as deeply as they do. Sometimes they do things in order to make others suffer their pain as a sense of revenge. Most of the time the things people do is uncalled for.

  5. The purpose of this play is to show what people would really do to better somebody else life to grow in their career. The sacrifice of taking care of the family with out perusing your dreams. In today that is still being done with a lot of people that still depend on each other to grow a family. But there is also women that are striving to be independent to seek their dreams.

  6. This story is still meaningful today for the fact of people commits crime over relationships all the time. Its not fair to the victim, especially if the victims are children. People get caught up in love so much well the other halve breaks his/her heart, they become heartless to anything and anyone else.

  7. The primary purpose of the play is the importance of power for one. Medea wanted power in being Jason’s only love, and being the only mother figure for her children. Jason wanted power of authority, like being the King. I believe it is still useful today because it asks us the question, what would we do for love? Medea chose love over her family, and ended up being betrayed from her husband, and killing her children and brother. I would like to say I would chose my family over “love” but it is hard to follow that when you think that the one you “love” would be there for you the rest of your life.

  8. The play is about Love, jealousy and revenge. Madea made alot of sacrefice to be with Jason, and only to be betrayed by him,but the extreme that she went throuh to take revenge on him was dispicable. Even thou this play was written centuries ago, there are people now that are making great sacrefices to be with the one they love, but when love turns to hate there is no telling what one might do.

  9. Personally i feel this plays purpose is to show that revenge consumes the soul. Madea took the lives of two innocent children, a princess, and a king among her own relatives, just to seek revenge against her ex-husband. Her actions were guided by blind rage and pain. She had no true reason to kill her sons and the princess and king did not need to die to serve her purpose. Now she will rot in hell for her actions.

  10. I think that the purpose of the play was to show how women were not treated fairly and with the same respect men got. Medea had no other choice but to make a point in the end of the story and kill her children and take revenge on her husband's wife and her dad. Now stories like that have made people realize over time that even-though women are different than men they should still be treated fairly and with respect.

  11. I think the purpose of the play was to show how people are imperfect creatures and that each and every one of us have problems. Both men and women are imperfect and we have points where we just can't take it anymore in relationships.

  12. I believe the purpose of this play was to show how far someone will go no matter the cercumstances to get back at someone that they truely love.

  13. The purpose of this play is how far one would go for love, power, and revenge. In Medea case, Medea killed her own family just to be with Jason and had children with him.

Jason, on the other hand, was willing to leave Medea and their children behind in order for him to be more powerfully thus causing Medea to seek revenge by her killing their children.

Thus you reap what you sow.

  14. The purpose of the playwright “Medea” is mainly to show the love, passion, and vengeance of a woman. I think that there is love and there is psychotic love. In this case, Madea has psychotic love to the point of killing for the one she loves. But I also believe that she loves herself more than she loves any other person. You see that very often in today’s society, woman as well as men going on killing sprees because their lover left them or cheated. I’m not sure if this teaches us to do otherwise though, it doesn’t tell us as readers that it’s a morally wrong thing to do or that she was later punished for what she did other than the fact that she was left lonely but she also had a place to go. So I’m my mind, this play is just to show and tell a tale of how some people’s minds turn.

  15. The primary purpose of this play was to criticize Greek behavior, entertain, attack the deep prejudice and for Euripides to express his shock. Medea felt betrayed and lonly after the events leading to her demise at the end of the play, although who could blame a woman for destroying the past to have a clean future, Euripedes still criticizes the dramatac Greek behavior in her actions. The entertainment purpose stems back to the creation of the theatrical stage, play were put on to entertain the people of towns. And to express his deepest shock formulated a storyline showing how all the dramatic events led to the dark conclusion that is Medea. It's a story of a woman who sought revenge in the best way she saw fit.
