Medea: Differences between Women and Men

The play “Medea” illustrates the differences and conflict between the genders. Discuss some differences between men and women and use one quote from the play to support your viewpoint.

  1. A difference between men and women that i've taken notice to would definently be their way of thinking. In general, I see that women are more emotional then men, thus, women think more with their emotions then men. So somtimes for women emotions can get in the way of a rational decision. For example, in the play "Medea" Jason says to Medea, "Why don't you master your emotions for the childrens's sake and calm yourself down?". I believe in this line he's asking Medea to try to calm down and stop thinking with her angry emotions because she's forgetting what might be good for the children.

  2. Most of us would agree that women tend to think more emotionally whereas men think more rationally. As a woman myself, I tend to think emotionally especially when my love one are involved which is the same for Medea.

For an example, Medea and Jason were having a heating discussion when Madea suddenly blurts out "Run away with me." Clearly she’s still in love with Jason though moments ago she was angry and bitter towards him. Jason on the other hand replies, “We’ve talked too long. Let’s cut this short right now….” Jason sees that Medea is not listening, decides to cut the conversation short and leaves.

  3. Personally I am happy that I live in this time period because, I don’t think I would be able to deal with the difference between the genders back then. Even though Creon cheated on his wife, banishing that should have been done immediately. “… You’re a clever woman versed in evil arts you are angry at having lost your husband love…” (pg4/par4) Madea children were probably the only victim that ended in a tragedy, but Creon could have been a target If Madea stayed any longer.

  4. A few differences between genders is that men are usually more aggressive in how they present themselves, and women usually are more caring and think about their actions. In Medea the men are the leaders and women are just second class citizens, who have to obey men. If a woman such as Medea does not obey her husband, he may do something cruel. “Cease this mouthing tempest of your bitter tongue, woman” (Jason, page 6).

  5. There are many difference between men and women. Unlike women who tend to be very emotional and take everything serious, men are more tougher and logical when it comes to there emotions. As in the play on page 6 Jason says "cease this mouthing tempest of your bitter tongue, women."

  6. This play definitely had a difference in perspective between genders because of the different way men and female comprehend something as in this quote from the play, "You wouldn't if the love question didn't upset you". As a man, Jason was trying to put aside the reason of his love for Medea aside to try and get them into a better position. Whereas, Medea couldn't evade her love for him, and the fact of sharing her husband with another woman, not thinking that the sacrifice would lead them into a better life.

  7. Men seek more direct solutions to conflicts. Rather than kill an absurd amount of people around a person to inflict pain, a man would more likely inflict pain directly on the person. Men arent exactly made of granite, but women tend to be more emotional than men, making them more susceptible to plots of revenge and other cynical acts. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

  8. Some differences between men and woman are that women are more emotional and the men are more aggressive. Men are mainly the head of the household while the Women stays Home and cleans up the house. Even though both have emotions, women tend to show theirs more easily. A man will hold his emotion bottled up inside. For example, "cease this mouthing tempest of your bitter tongue, woman" (Jason pg.6) and this line from the play clearly shows that the man has power and authority. If madea didnt follow his rules, he probably would act out of character.

  9. Men and women are very different in so many ways, even though we were made to be companions. By nature men are made to be stronger and more aggressive then woman, and woman are more emotional and caring. Men are most likely to deal with difficult situations than women can, for example in the case of the story Medea, she is devastated with the actions of her husband and the way he is dealing with the situation and she says to him " What a coward you are, to come to me, my worst enemy, with such overconfidence. "

  10. Men & women are so different yet so alike. Men are more aggressive and manly. More head of household, 'I call the shots guy.' Women are more emotional, sensitive, and loving. They stay home and cook, take care of the children, etc. I am happy that I am living now in this time period rather than even 60 years ago. It all seemed so much harder back then. Technology has made our lives so much easier.
