The Playwright: Character Types


Using any fairy tale or classical story (for example Cinderella, Pinocchio), identify the four character types: protagonist, antagonist, confidante, and raisonneur(wise one).

  1. In the story Pinocchio, the protagonist is the Pinocchio, the antagonist is Honest John, the confidante is the guy who created pinocchio, and the raisonneur is the fairy.

  6. From Disney's 1973 animated film "Robin Hood", Robin Hood the heroic protagonist and his merry men Little John the confidante and Friar Tuck the raisonneur try to save the poor from the greedy Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham the antagonists.

In the classic fairytale, Sleeping Beauty, Princess Aurora represents the Protagonist, the twelfth angered fairy represents the atagonists, the Princ who awakens her from her "dead" sleep-represents the confidante and the twelve fairies who give her the gifts of beauty, wisdom and the re-bound curse, represent the wise ones.
