Five Elements of Design


Using the five elements of design (line, mass, composition, texture, and color) evaluate this set design.

  1. Lines- I see horizontal lines, vertical lines and diagonal lines.
    Mass- I see an even distribution on the stage.
    Composition- The balance and arrangement is all spread out.
    Texture- I can feel the soft fabric of the carpet and the smooth feel of the wood.
    Color- I see the color brown, green and pink.

  2. Lines - all the line are jumbled and off axis
    Mass - most of the mass is directed to the middle (couch)
    Composition - lighting in middle makes the couch the center of attension
    Texture - i can feel the softness of the carpet
    Color - with the large mix of bright colors I'd think it'll be humorous

  3. Lines- horizontal, diagonal, and horizontal
    Mass- everthing is balanced out
    Composition- everything is neatly in place
    Texture- the smooth carpet and fine shiny wood
    Color- the play looks like it will be relaxed with the colors brown, pink, and green being the spotlight

  4. Lines- I see vertical lines on the doors, chairs, and windows; Diagonal lines on the stairs and doors,and i also see horizontal lines on the stage floor.
    Mass- everything seems balanced around center stage.
    Composition- the objects seem evenly spread apart.
    Texture. I can feel the wood on the stairs and the furriness of the carpet.
    Color- There is green paint on the walls which is generally soothing and the more radiant pinkish color center stage to contrast the background.

    Mass- everthing seems to be balanced around and behind the couch
    Composition- everything is placed to make the actors feel at home
    Texture- the smooth wood floor and carpet,and the table cloth
    Color- I see colors like pink, brown, green and beige

  6. Lines: There are vertical lines on the stair railings, windows, doors, and walls. For the horizontal lines there are walls and couch and diagonal lines are in the walls and stage.
    Mass: Everything is balanced and in ordered.
    Composition: Everything is centered around the couch because of the lightning and position of the couch.
    Texture: I can feel the smoothness of the wood and the softness of the carpet and table cloth.
    Color: The prominent colors I see is green, yellow, red which makes it feel cheery.

  7. Lines- I see horizontal lines as the stairs and vertical lines as the windows and cabinets.
    Mass- I see an even distribution balanced on the stage.
    Composition- The balance and arrangement is all spread out.
    Texture- I can feel the roughness of the wood on top of the stage, and the confines of the couch.
    Color- I see calmness with the colors brown, pink, and green being the spotlight.

  8. Lines-There are vertical lines on the stairs and its railings, windows, doors, and walls. Horizontal lines on walls and couch. Diagonal lines are in the walls and stage.
    Mass-Balanced on both sides of the stage and in order.
    Composition-Everything is centered around the couch because it is the center of attention in the play.
    Texture-You can feel the smoothness of the wood and the softness of the carpet and table cloth as well as the comfort of the couch.
    Color-The major colors are green, yellow, red which makes the place seem homely and comforting like a regular house.

    Mass- There is an even distribution of mass amongst the stage.
    Composition- The center of the attention, whether it be lighting or furniture, seems to be centered around the couch.
    Texture- I feel the smooth texture of the wood and the soft welcoming carpet.
    Color- I see the colors: Red, brown, green and pink.

  11. Lines-I see diagonal, horizontal, and vertical lines
    Mass- seems out of balance but in balance and the same time all over the stage, maybe it’s just my phobia of having to much stuff all over the place
    Composition-the light directs our attention to certain areas spread around the stage
    Texture-I can feel the fabric of the coach and foot rest, the smooth wood, the hard doorknob and floor.
    Color- There is too many colors all over the place, the colors are meant for soothing but I have a tingle of a chaotic feeling.

    mass:Every object is evenly spaced and everything fits together.
    composition: The table in the middle of the stage is the center of attention and everything is spaced evenly from it.
    texture:You can feel the designs on the walls and the material on the couch and the smoothness of the floors.
    color: Brown, green, white, and pink.

  13. Lines- I see vertical lines on the walls and the doors as well as horizontal lines on the steps and the doors. I also see diagonal lines on the stairs.
    Mass- The couch is the main focus in this picture and everything else is balanced around it.
    Composition- Everything in the picture has been placed with organization. All of it is balanced.
    Texture- I can feel the toughness of the wood.
    Color-The couch seems as though it is red which makes it the main focus in the picture, Everything else are mellow colors that seem to make the rest of the place almost calm.

    Comp.- Directed towards middle of room or couch because of lighting.
    Texture- I feel the smoothness of the nice shiny wood.

  16. Lines : I see vertical lines formed by the wall edges, horzontal lines formed by the planes on the walls, and diagnol lines formed by the staircase.

    Mass : the mass of the set design seems to be mostly in the center of the stage. (seems evenly balanced)

    Composition : The objects on the set seem to be evenly spread out.

    Texture : I can feel the softness of the pillow-top cop, the roughness of the wood on the staircase, and i can feel the smoothness of the carpet.

    Colors : I can see the green on the walls, and the pink in the carpet and couch. The set design and colors shown makes it seem like the play is humurous.
